Castle: “The Mistress Always Spanks Twice”

Leave it to Castle to turn a BDSM kitsch into a quality episode.

This week’s Castle started out with one of the creepier, nastier dead bodies I’ve seen in awhile. Handcrafted, custom domme gear, pink lingerie, and caramel sauce suspended from monkey bars. (Seriously, who comes up with this stuff? I want to shake their hand…probably through a glove.)

“The Mistress Always Spanks Twice” could probably be summarized in as many words as the title takes up. Kinda saw the eventual actual murderer coming as well as all the other steps along the way. Purely in terms of the storyline, this episode was pretty unremarkable.

What it was was laugh-out-loud funny. Castle is always hilarious, but it’s been awhile since I got this many belly laughs out of any episode. (Again, of course it’s the BDSM themed one.) The best part about the comedy in this episode, though, is that history has been made: Stana Katic out-performed her co-star. Much as I love her, I will admit that I wasn’t sure that was even possible. Lady, you rock my world times twelve.

I suppose we all saw the dominatrix episode coming. The parallels between that and the Beckett-Castle relationship are just a little too obvious, and the show is just a little too tongue-in-cheek for it not to happen. I mean, the line “I’d be happy to let you spank me” has been in the intro for how long now? Still, as it always does, Castle managed to make even the predictable all sorts of hysterically enjoyable.

Final note: We met Ryan’s girlfriend!, played by Seamus Dever’s very lovely real-life wife Juliana. Can I get a collective DAWWWWW.

Absolutely agree on all points. My one (slight minuscule) disappointment was the whole Alexis-tries-cheerleading storyline; I usually like the little side plots with her and the grandmother, but this one seemed a little pointless.
