Pineapple’s Big Moments

Television has plenty of unexpected stars. This one is a fruit.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of pineapple. Fresh pineapple is one of the most delicious things in the world, in my own humble opinion. But that’s no reason why it should end up being the choice fruit for weird television references. Is it?

Maybe it’s the tropical nature. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s a weird shape. Maybe it’s the spiny texture. Maybe it’s because of the funny name. But whatever the reason, pineapple has had more than its fair share of the small screen spot light (in comparison to other produce). Here are some of it’s better moments:

Bones – “The Secret in the Soil”

In this episode of Bones involving the death of a farmer who is part of an organic farming cohort, a pineapple plant bug is the key piece of evidence that leads the team around the final turning point and enables them to get to the bottom of the mystery. This episode also features a scene where Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) taste a smoothie from an organic hothouse farmer who grows the tropical fruit year round and offers them the freshest pineapple they’ve ever tasted.

CSI: NY – “The Triangle”

As in Bones, in this episode of CSI: NY pineapple proves to be a key piece of evidence. Not the actual fruit, this time, but a sticker shaped like a pineapple that carries a faint odor of zinc oxide. It turns out to be a sticker from a tanning salon linking the daughter of a well-known thief to the attack on an armored car transporting bank funds.

Psych – All the Time

I haven’t seen that much of Psych. It’s not one of those shows I spend a whole lot of thinking about. But in the course of my investigation for this post (which was minimal) it became immediately apparent that, in Psych, pineapple is A BIG FREAKING DEAL. There’s a pineapple in every single episode, apparently – see the complete list here.

How I Met Your Mother – “The Pineapple Incident”

Possibly the most perplexing of all pineapple appearances, the pineapple in this episode of How I Met Your Mother is a source of mystery. The episode tracks Ted (Josh Radnor) as he attempts to recreate a night of drunken escapades from memory. By the end of the show, he manages to account for every strange happening – except for the fact that he woke up in bed with a pineapple (oh, and a girl).

Chuck – “Chuck versus The Nemesis)

In this episode of Chuck, “pineapple” is the keyword for a Buy More evacuation that Morgan (Joshua Gomez) establishes as an emergency measure in case of Black Friday sales riots. Chuck (Zachary Levi) calls the evacuation into effect to avoid being kidnapped by a Fulcrum agent. Chaos ensues. All because of the pineapple.

Spongebob Squarepants – Intro

Finally, what is perhaps pineapple’s most enduring television moment: it’s role as the residence of one Spongebob Squarepants, cited in the intro.

As you can see, the pineapple has managed to worm its way into all corners of the television universe. Where will it appear next? Only time will tell…

(For the record, I’m not sure exactly how or why this post came into being. But I really really enjoy it.)

I’m going back through these just looking around and realized that you should totally watch some Psych. I’m a big fan of the show and have watched it from the beginning. Totally worth it.
