An Open Letter

Dear Dave Itzkoff,

I’m sure that the segment you wrote for The New York Times ArtsBeat this morning will be getting an awful lot of visitors and response today and in the days to come. (And yes, one of them was me.)

You address Jon Stewart’s excellent extended impression of Glenn Beck from Thursday’s episode of The Daily Show. Your main point is an expressed worry that such characterizations may become a trend – because, as you point out, Jimmy Kimmel something similar (an impression of Jay Leno) about two months ago.

Newsflash: this is not the first time Jon Stewart has done an extended impression of Glenn Beck. You know when the first time was? Four months ago. This is a continuing joke.

I’m sure you felt like you were being awfully clever this morning when you wrote out your observation about Jon Stewart latching onto Jimmy Kimmel’s concept. I’m sorry, but I’m here to burst your bubble. Nothing against Kimmel, but he’s got nothing on Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart and team are comedic innovators. If either of these was mimicking the other, it’s the other way around.

So congratulations on the sure to be oft-visited segment about Jon Stewart’s Glenn Beck Part Deux.

Next time, maybe check your facts a little.

Amen! Preach it to the masses! Stewart Forever!

I’m waiting for the day when either Glenn Beck goes on The Daily Show or Jon Stewart goes on The Glenn Beck Show. It will be EPIC.
